Maybe you’re driving near Downtown Lawrenceville or dropping your child off at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics Science and Technology, and you’ve started noticing a few things. It could be crowding in their smile, a habit of open-mouth breathing at night, or a bite that just doesn’t seem to fit together quite right. You know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first check-up around age seven, but what does that visit actually look like?
The biggest thing holding many parents back isn’t the cost or the time, it’s the uncertainty. Will they recommend braces for a 7-year-old? Will they say everything looks fine and send us home? Will there be X-rays, scans, or anything uncomfortable? These are the questions we hear all the time, and we believe the best way to answer them is to be completely transparent about the process.
Here’s exactly what happens at your child’s first Phase 1 orthodontics visit at iCare Orthodontics in Norcross. Our office is on Indian Trail Lilburn Rd, right by Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) and near the Beaver Ruin side of Norcross. The drive is most practical for families on the Lilburn/Norcross side of Lawrenceville, especially those already using Lawrenceville Hwy / 29 for their commute or school runs.
Your Child's First iCare Visit: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Arrival and Welcome
When you walk in, our front desk team will greet you and help you get settled. We designed our space to feel calm and comfortable for both kids and parents. We don’t run a high-volume, in-and-out operation. Our goal is to keep every visit organized, on time, and respectful of your family’s schedule. For families juggling busy calendars, we offer morning slots as early as 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, plus Saturday appointments from 9 AM to 2 PM.
The Digital Scan
The first step in the evaluation is a quick, easy digital scan. We use an iTero intraoral scanner, which means there are no traditional putty impressions or goopy trays. One of our team members will use a small wand to pass over your child’s teeth for a few minutes. As they do, a complete and precise 3D digital model of your child’s teeth and jaw appears on-screen in real time. Kids typically find this part interesting, not uncomfortable. It's about as intimidating as an electric toothbrush.
The On-Screen Review
Next, Dr. Kim will pull up the 3D scan on a large screen in a private consultation room and walk through it with you, not at you. We show you what we’re seeing, in plain language. If there’s a narrow palate that could affect your child’s airway, you’ll see it. If the bite is shifting because of how the teeth are erupting, you’ll see it. If growth looks completely normal for your child’s age, you’ll see that, too. She takes the time to answer every question before suggesting any next steps. Sometimes, Dr. Kim may ask Dr. Vinh, our other board-certified orthodontist, for his perspective to ensure we’ve considered every angle. Our goal is for you to leave this part understanding what we found and whether treatment is actually needed right now.
The Honest Answer
Here’s the part that often surprises parents: for many children, the answer is "not yet." A significant number of kids who come in for an early orthodontic evaluation in our Lawrenceville-area practice do not need Phase 1 treatment right away, and Dr. Kim will tell you that clearly and directly. When that’s the case, your child enters our complimentary monitoring program. We’ll check in on their growth and development every six months, at no cost, to make sure we don’t miss the ideal treatment window if one becomes necessary. If treatment is recommended, you'll leave with a clear plan, a 3D visualization of the goals, a timeline, and a full cost estimate before making any decisions.
The Financial Conversation
We believe in complete cost clarity. No treatment is ever recommended without a full, transparent financial picture first. Our treatment coordinator will review your insurance benefits, which we verify before your first visit if you provide your plan details. We’ll also walk you through our flexible payment options, including Cherry 0% interest financing for qualified patients, CareCredit, and our own in-house, interest-free payment plan. We don't spring financial surprises. You’ll know exactly what you’re signing up for before you sign anything.
What Phase 1 Treatment Actually Involves
If Dr. Kim recommends moving forward with an early orthodontic evaluation and treatment, it’s important to know that Phase 1 doesn't usually mean a full set of braces. The goal is to address foundational issues while your child is still growing. Most Phase 1 treatment at iCare centers on one of four types of appliances:
- Palatal Expander: This is the most common Phase 1 appliance. It gently widens the upper jaw to create the space needed for adult teeth to erupt properly. A wider palate can also improve airway width, which is helpful for children who are chronic mouth-breathers.
- Space Maintainers: If a baby tooth is lost too early, these simple appliances hold that space open so the permanent tooth can erupt into its correct position without crowding.
- Habit Appliances: These are used to address thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habits that can narrow the dental arch and push teeth forward, leading to bite problems.
- Functional Appliances: In cases where an underbite or overbite is developing, these appliances help guide jaw growth into a more balanced position.
All our appliances are planned digitally using the data from the iTero scan. Phase 1 typically lasts about 9 to 12 months. After that, your child enters a "rest phase" while their remaining permanent teeth come in, and we monitor them at no charge. Appointments during Phase 1 are infrequent, usually just every 6 to 10 weeks.
Phase 2, The Bigger Picture
It’s helpful to see Phase 1 as building the foundation for a healthy smile, while Phase 2 is where we build the final structure. After Phase 1 treatment is complete, your child will enter a resting period for about 12 to 18 months, which allows the remaining permanent teeth to erupt. We’ll continue to monitor their progress during this time.
Phase 2, which is comprehensive orthodontic treatment, typically begins between ages 11 and 14, once enough permanent teeth are present. Because Phase 1 already handled the heavy lifting, like correcting arch width and guiding jaw position, Phase 2 treatment is often shorter and simpler for our Phase 1 patients. A case that might have taken 24 to 30 months can often be completed in just 12 to 18 months. This means a child who finishes their rest phase in 2026 might only need about a year of braces or aligners to achieve their final, beautiful smile.
For Phase 2, we offer KLOwen SL custom digital metal braces, LightForce custom ceramic braces, or Invisalign. We use the same precise, custom digital planning for Phase 2 that we do for Phase 1, ensuring every detail is tailored to your child.
Fitting It Into a Lawrenceville School Schedule
We know that families with students at Gwinnett School of Mathematics Science and Technology and other demanding Gwinnett schools can’t easily pull their kids out of class. That’s why we’ve built our schedule to accommodate busy families. iCare offers early morning appointments starting at 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, allowing students to get to school on time. We also have Saturday hours from 9 AM to 2 PM. Because Phase 1 visits are only needed every 6 to 10 weeks, fitting them into your calendar is manageable.
Why Some Lawrenceville Families Choose iCare in Norcross
We know there may be an orthodontist for kids closer to you in Lawrenceville. The families who make the drive to our Norcross office often do so because they’re looking for a specific kind of care: conservative, growth-focused, and explained with total clarity. Dr. Jamie Kim and Dr. Vinh Huynh are both board-certified orthodontists, a distinction that represents a deep commitment to the specialty. We use digital tools like iTero scanning not just for precision, but to help parents see and understand exactly what’s happening with their child’s development.
Lawrenceville is a wide area, so the drive depends on where you’re starting. The trip makes sense for many parents already traveling toward Norcross, Lilburn, or I-85 for school and after-school activities. It’s often a practical choice for families balancing school schedules around Lawrenceville who want to see a provider that offers Saturday and early-morning appointment times.
