What Suwanee Parents Can Expect at a Phase 1 Orthodontic Visit in Norcross

Posted May 25, 2026 9 min read

Maybe you're coming from the Sims Lake Park or Roberts Elementary side of Suwanee, and you've started noticing crowding, open-mouth breathing, or a bite that doesn't seem to fit quite right for your child. It's a common moment for parents, wondering if it's "the right time" to see an orthodontist, or if waiting is the better option.

Often, what holds parents back isn't the decision itself, but the uncertainty of that first visit. Will they recommend braces for a 7-year-old? Will they say everything looks fine and send us home? Will there be X-rays, scans, or anything uncomfortable that makes the child dread future appointments?

We understand those questions. Here's what happens at your child's first visit to iCare Orthodontics in Norcross. Our office is on Indian Trail Lilburn Rd in Norcross, right by Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) and near the Beaver Ruin side of Norcross. From parts of Suwanee, the drive is via I-85, depending on traffic around Jimmy Carter and Duluth.

Your Child's First iCare Visit: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Arrival and Welcome

When you arrive at iCare Orthodontics & Dentistry, you'll be greeted by our front desk team. We'll help you get settled, clearly explain any initial paperwork, and make sure you and your child feel comfortable. Our space is designed to be calm and welcoming for kids and parents alike. We don't run a high-volume in-and-out operation. Our goal is to keep the visit calm, organized, and respectful of your time. For families with busy school or activity schedules, we offer morning slots as early as 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Saturday appointments are available from 9 AM–2 PM.

The Digital Scan

One of the first things we'll do is take a digital scan of your child's teeth using our iTero intraoral scanner. This means no traditional putty impressions or messy trays. Instead, a small, comfortable wand passes gently over the teeth for just a few minutes. As it moves, a complete, precise 3D digital model of your child's teeth and jaw appears on-screen in real time. Kids typically find this process interesting, not uncomfortable. It's about as intimidating as a toothbrush. This advanced scan efficiently replaces what used to require messy trays and a lab turnaround, often handling it all digitally.

The On-Screen Review

Next, Dr. Jamie Kim will usually pull up the 3D scan on a large screen and walk through it with you. We don't just tell you what we see, we show you. If there's a narrow palate, you'll see it clearly on the screen. If the bite is shifting, you'll see that too. If growth looks normal for your child's age, you'll see that just as clearly. Dr. Kim explains what each finding means for your child's development in plain language, not clinical shorthand. She takes the time to answer all your questions before moving on to any recommendation. Occasionally, Dr. Vinh will provide clinical support and guidance when Dr. Kim wants another orthodontic perspective. Our goal is for parents to leave this part of the visit understanding what we found, what we're watching, and whether treatment is actually needed.

The Honest Answer

Here's the part that surprises most parents: the answer is often "not yet." Many children who come in for an early evaluation do not need Phase 1 treatment right away. Dr. Kim will tell you that clearly and directly. When that's the case, your child enters a complimentary monitoring program. iCare checks in every six months, at no cost, to carefully watch the growth window and decide if and when treatment becomes necessary. When treatment is recommended, you'll leave with a clear treatment plan, a 3D visualization of what we aim to achieve, an expected timeline, and a detailed cost estimate before you need to make any decisions.

The Financial Conversation

We believe in full transparency, especially when it comes to finances. No treatment is recommended without a complete, transparent cost picture first. Our team will clearly explain all financing options available to you, which include Cherry 0% interest financing for qualified patients, CareCredit, and iCare's own in-office interest-free payment plan. We also verify your insurance coverage before your first visit if you provide your plan details, so you'll know what to expect. We don't spring financial surprises. You'll know what you're signing up for before you sign anything, ensuring you feel confident in your choices.

What Phase 1 Treatment Actually Involves

If Phase 1 treatment is recommended, it's typically a targeted approach to guide jaw growth and create a better environment for permanent teeth. Most Phase 1 treatment at iCare centers on one of four main types of appliances:

  • Palatal expander: This gently widens the upper jaw to create crucial space for adult teeth to erupt properly and can also significantly improve airway width, which is important for breathing and overall health. It's the most common Phase 1 appliance we use.
  • Space maintainers: These hold necessary space after early baby tooth loss. This prevents adjacent teeth from drifting, ensuring permanent teeth have the room they need to erupt in the correct position.
  • Habit appliances: Designed to address common habits like thumb-sucking and tongue-thrusting that can lead to a narrow arch and push teeth forward, guiding development toward a healthier bite.
  • Functional appliances: These are used to guide jaw position during growth when an underbite or overbite is developing, helping to correct these issues early.

All of these appliances are planned digitally using precise iTero scan data. What used to require a 3–4 week lab return for fabrication is now often handled efficiently in-house, ensuring quicker starts to treatment. Phase 1 typically lasts 9–12 months, followed by a rest phase while the remaining permanent teeth erupt. iCare monitors your child during this critical rest phase at no charge. Appointments during Phase 1 are infrequent, typically every 6–10 weeks, to minimize disruption to your family's schedule.

Phase 2, The Bigger Picture

Phase 1 treatment creates the essential foundation for a healthy bite and smile. Once that foundational work is complete, a rest period of 12–18 months allows remaining permanent teeth to erupt naturally. We continue to monitor your child's dental development closely during this phase at no cost.

Phase 2, where the final beautiful smile is built, typically begins when enough permanent teeth are present, usually between ages 11 and 14. Because Phase 1 handled the structural work, like arch width, bite classification, and skeletal position, Phase 2 cases for our Phase 1 patients often run shorter. We frequently see treatment times of 12–18 months instead of the typical 24–30 months for comprehensive orthodontics.

For Phase 2, iCare offers a range of advanced options, including KLOwen SL custom digital metal braces, LightForce custom ceramic braces, Invisalign, or Invisalign First for younger teens. We use the same custom digital planning approach for Phase 2 as we do for Phase 1, meaning no stock brackets or average-fit assumptions. Your child's treatment is uniquely designed for their specific needs. After Phase 2, retention is key, and we provide both bonded retainers and removable Essix retainers, with the full retention plan clearly explained at the Phase 2 start appointment.

Fitting It Into a Suwanee School Schedule

We know Roberts Elementary and neighboring schools don't always make it easy to pull kids for appointments. That's why iCare works to provide flexible scheduling options for families from Suwanee public schools, private schools, and homeschool routines. We offer early morning slots starting at 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, allowing students to often make it to school before the first bell. Saturday appointments are also available from 9 AM–2 PM for families who prefer not to take kids out of school. Phase 1 visits are infrequent by design, minimizing time out of class. After the initial evaluation and appliance fitting, most families only need to come in every 6–10 weeks. A timely evaluation can give parents a clear path forward and helps avoid guessing while the growth window is still useful.

Why Some Suwanee Families Choose iCare in Norcross

There may be orthodontists closer to Suwanee, especially on Peachtree Industrial Blvd or in other parts of Gwinnett. Some families still come to Norcross because they want a specific kind of early orthodontic evaluation: one that is conservative, growth-focused, digitally advanced, and explained with clarity. Dr. Jamie Kim and Dr. Vinh Huynh are both board-certified orthodontists with decades of combined experience. Our office uses iTero scanning, advanced digital treatment planning, and in-house technology to make findings easier for parents to understand and decisions easier to make. We serve families from Suwanee public schools, private schools, and homeschool routines, including private school families around Suwanee and Gwinnett, all seeking a clear, conservative approach to their child's orthodontic needs.
