Maybe you're coming from the Main Street Tucker or Tucker High School side of Tucker, and you've started noticing crowding, open-mouth breathing, or a bite that doesn't seem to fit quite right in your child. You might be wondering if it's too early to see an orthodontist, or if waiting is the better option. The thought of adding another appointment to an already busy schedule, especially if it means driving out of the immediate area, can feel like a lot to manage.
Often, what holds parents back isn't the concern itself, but simply not knowing what to expect from an early orthodontic evaluation. Will they recommend braces for a 7-year-old? Will they say everything looks fine and send us home? Will there be X-rays, scans, or anything uncomfortable for a young child?
We understand those questions. Here's what happens at your child's first visit to iCare Orthodontics in Norcross. Our office is on Indian Trail Lilburn Rd in Norcross, right by Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) and near the Beaver Ruin side of Norcross. While we're not right in Tucker, the drive makes the most sense from parts of Tucker. From Tucker, Lawrenceville Hwy / 29 is often the cleaner mental route toward Indian Trail.
Your Child's First iCare Visit: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Arrival and Welcome
When you arrive at iCare Orthodontics, you'll find a calm, comfortable space designed with both kids and parents in mind. Our front desk team will greet you warmly and help you complete any necessary paperwork, ensuring you feel settled and informed from the moment you walk through our doors. We don't run a high-volume in-and-out operation. Our goal is to keep the visit calm, organized, and respectful of your time. For busy families, we offer morning slots as early as 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We also have Saturday appointments available from 9 AM–2 PM for families who can't pull kids from school during the week.
The Digital Scan
One of the first things we do for every child is perform an iTero intraoral scan. This process uses a small wand that gently passes over your child's teeth for a few minutes. It's completely non-invasive, meaning no traditional putty impressions or trays, which many kids find uncomfortable. As the wand moves, a complete, precise 3D digital model of your child's teeth and jaw appears on-screen in real time. Kids typically find this interesting, not uncomfortable. It's about as intimidating as a toothbrush. This scan usually replaces the traditional impression process. What used to require messy trays and a lab turnaround is now often handled digitally right here in the office.
The On-Screen Review
Once the scan is complete, Dr. Jamie Kim will usually pull up the 3D model on a large screen in the consultation room. She'll walk through the scan with you, not at you, explaining everything she sees in plain language, not clinical shorthand. We show you what we're seeing. If there's a narrow palate, you'll see it. If the bite is shifting, you'll see it. If growth looks normal for your child's age, you'll see that too. Dr. Kim will explain what each finding means for your child's development and answer any questions you have before discussing any potential recommendations. When Dr. Kim wants another orthodontic perspective, Dr. Vinh provides clinical support and guidance. Our goal is for parents to leave this part understanding what we found, what we're watching, and whether treatment is actually needed.
The Honest Answer
Here's the part that surprises most parents: the answer is often "not yet." Many children who come in for an early evaluation do not need Phase 1 treatment right away. Dr. Kim will tell you that clearly and directly. When that's the case, your child enters a complimentary monitoring program. iCare checks in every six months, at no cost, to watch the growth window and ensure we intervene only if and when it's truly beneficial. When treatment is recommended, you'll leave with a clear treatment plan, a 3D visualization, an expected timeline, and a cost estimate before making any decisions.
The Financial Conversation
No treatment is recommended without a full, transparent cost picture first. Our patient coordinator will sit down with you to explain all financing options available, including Cherry 0% interest financing for qualified patients, CareCredit, and iCare's own in-office interest-free payment plan. If you provide your plan details beforehand, we can verify your insurance coverage before your first visit, so you already have an idea of your benefits. We don't spring financial surprises. You'll know what you're signing up for before you sign anything.
What Phase 1 Treatment Actually Involves
Phase 1 treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics, is designed to address developing problems with jaw growth or emerging adult teeth while a child's bones are still growing. This typically occurs between the ages of 7 and 10. Most Phase 1 treatment at iCare centers on one of four appliances:
- Palatal expander: This gently widens the upper jaw to create necessary space for adult teeth and can also improve airway width. It's one of the most common Phase 1 appliances.
- Space maintainers: These are used when baby teeth are lost too early, holding the space open so permanent teeth can erupt in the correct position without becoming crowded.
- Habit appliances: These address detrimental habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting that can narrow the arch and push teeth forward, guiding healthier oral development.
- Functional appliances: These guide jaw position during growth when an underbite or overbite is developing, correcting skeletal discrepancies early on.
All appliances are planned digitally using the iTero scan data. This advanced approach means what used to require a 3–4 week lab return is now often fabricated in-house, making the process more efficient. Phase 1 typically lasts 9–12 months, followed by a rest phase while remaining permanent teeth erupt. iCare monitors this rest phase at no charge, ensuring ongoing support. Appointments during Phase 1 are infrequent, typically every 6–10 weeks, to minimize disruption to your family's schedule.
Phase 2, The Bigger Picture
Phase 1 treatment creates the foundation for a healthy smile by addressing skeletal or spacing issues early. Phase 2 is where the final smile is built, focusing on aligning all the permanent teeth into their ideal positions for aesthetics and function.
After Phase 1, there's a rest period of 12–18 months that allows the remaining permanent teeth to erupt naturally. iCare monitors your child's progress during this phase with regular, complimentary check-ups. Phase 2 typically begins when enough permanent teeth are present, usually between ages 11 and 14, depending on individual development.
Because Phase 1 handled the structural work, arch width, bite class, and skeletal position, Phase 2 cases for our Phase 1 patients often run shorter. Many complete treatment in 12–18 months instead of the typical 24–30 months for comprehensive orthodontics. Phase 2 options at iCare include KLOwen SL custom digital metal braces, LightForce custom ceramic braces, Invisalign, or Invisalign First. We use the same custom digital planning approach for Phase 2 as we do for Phase 1, no stock brackets, no average-fit assumptions. Retention after Phase 2 is key for maintaining the results, so we provide both bonded retainers and removable Essix retainers, with the full retention plan explained at the Phase 2 start appointment.
Fitting It Into a Tucker School Schedule
We know Tucker High School and neighboring schools don't make it easy to pull kids for appointments, especially for parents on the north/east Tucker side balancing school pickup, athletics, and after-school appointments. To help accommodate busy academic and activity calendars, iCare offers early morning slots starting at 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays. This allows students to complete their appointment and often make it to school before the first bell. We also provide Saturday appointments, running from 9 AM–2 PM, for additional flexibility. Phase 1 visits are infrequent by design. After the initial evaluation and fitting, most families come in every 6–10 weeks, making it easier to plan around school. A timely evaluation helps parents avoid guessing while the growth window is still useful. This is especially helpful for Christian school families around Tucker, Lilburn, and Norcross who may have unique academic schedules.
Why Some Tucker Families Choose iCare in Norcross
There may be orthodontists closer to Tucker, but some families still come to Norcross because they want a specific kind of early orthodontic evaluation: conservative, growth-focused, digital, and explained clearly. Dr. Jamie Kim and Dr. Vinh Huynh are both board-certified orthodontists, bringing decades of combined experience to every case. Our office uses advanced iTero scanning, digital treatment planning, and in-house technology to make findings easier for parents to understand and to provide more precise, efficient care. We focus on transparent communication and ensuring you have all the information you need. From the perspective of parents on the north/east Tucker side balancing school pickup, athletics, and after-school appointments, our accessible location near Indian Trail Lilburn Road often streamlines multiple errands.
