Your Child's First iCare Orthodontics Visit: A Duluth Family Walkthrough

Posted May 25, 2026 8 min read

Maybe you're coming from the Duluth Town Green or Chattahoochee Elementary side of Duluth, and you've started noticing crowding, open-mouth breathing, or a bite that doesn't seem to fit quite right in your child. You know it’s a good idea to get an evaluation, but the thought of a first orthodontic visit can feel a little intimidating, especially if you’re not sure what to expect.

Will they recommend braces for a 7-year-old? Will they say everything looks fine and send us home? Will there be X-rays, scans, or anything uncomfortable that might upset your child? It’s natural to have questions and want clarity before committing to an appointment.

Here's what happens at your child's first visit to iCare Orthodontics & Dentistry in Norcross. Our office is on Indian Trail Lilburn Rd in Norcross, right by Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) and near the Beaver Ruin side of Norcross. The drive makes the most sense from the Pleasant Hill side of Duluth, depending on traffic, and we're a short drive from parts of Duluth.

Your Child's First iCare Visit: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Arrival and Welcome

From the moment you walk into our Norcross office, our front desk team works to make sure you and your child feel welcome and settled. We’ll help you with any necessary paperwork, answer initial questions, and guide you comfortably to the clinical area. We don't run a high-volume in-and-out operation. Our goal is to keep the visit calm, organized, and respectful of your time. We offer morning slots as early as 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Saturday appointments are available from 9 AM–2 PM for families who can't pull kids from school during the week.

The Digital Scan

One of the first things we do for a Phase 1 evaluation is a digital scan using iTero intraoral scanning technology. This means no traditional putty impressions or messy trays. Instead, a small, comfortable wand passes over your child's teeth for just a few minutes. As it moves, a complete, precise 3D digital model of their teeth and jaw appears on a screen in real time. Kids typically find this interesting, not uncomfortable. It's about as intimidating as a toothbrush. This scan usually replaces the traditional impression process entirely. What used to require messy trays and a lab turnaround is now often handled digitally right in our office.

The On-Screen Review

After the scan, Dr. Jamie Kim, a board-certified orthodontist, will usually pull up your child's 3D digital model on a large screen and walk through it with you, not at you. We believe in transparency and showing you what we're seeing. If there's a narrow palate, you'll see it on the screen. If the bite is shifting or not aligning correctly, you'll see it. If growth looks perfectly normal for your child's age, you'll see that too, with Dr. Kim explaining why. She takes the time to explain what each finding means for your child's development in plain language, not clinical shorthand. Dr. Vinh Huynh, also a board-certified orthodontist, may offer clinical support and guidance when Dr. Kim wants another orthodontic perspective. Our goal is for parents to leave this part understanding what we found, what we're watching, and whether treatment is actually needed.

The Honest Answer

Here's the part that surprises most parents: the answer is often "not yet." Many children who come in for an early evaluation do not need Phase 1 treatment right away. Dr. Kim will tell you that clearly and directly if it’s the case. When that's the scenario, your child enters a complimentary monitoring program. iCare checks in every six months, at no cost, to watch their growth window and track the eruption of permanent teeth. When Phase 1 treatment is recommended, you'll leave with a clear treatment plan, a 3D visualization of what we aim to achieve, an expected timeline, and a full cost estimate before making any decisions.

The Financial Conversation

No treatment is recommended without a full, transparent cost picture first. We understand that financial clarity is important for families. Our team will explain all available financing options upfront, which include Cherry 0% interest financing for qualified patients, CareCredit, and iCare's own in-office interest-free payment plans. We also verify your insurance benefits before your first visit if you provide your plan details. We don't spring financial surprises. You'll know exactly what you're signing up for before you sign anything, allowing you to make an informed choice for your child's health and your family's budget.

What Phase 1 Treatment Actually Involves

If Dr. Kim recommends Phase 1 interceptive orthodontics, it means we’re addressing a specific growth or bite issue early, while your child’s jaws are still developing. Most Phase 1 treatment at iCare centers on one of four appliances:

  • Palatal expander: This is often the most common Phase 1 appliance. It gently widens the upper jaw to create crucial space for adult teeth and can significantly improve airway width, benefiting breathing and overall health.
  • Space maintainers: If your child loses a baby tooth early, a space maintainer holds that spot open, preventing adjacent teeth from drifting and ensuring permanent teeth erupt in the right position.
  • Habit appliances: These are designed to help address harmful habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting that can narrow the dental arch and push teeth forward, impacting bite development.
  • Functional appliances: Used to guide jaw position during growth, these appliances are effective when an underbite or overbite is developing due, in part, to jaw discrepancies.

All of these appliances are planned digitally using the precise data from your child's iTero scan. What used to require a 3–4 week lab return is now often fabricated in-house, making the process faster and more accurate. Phase 1 typically lasts 9–12 months, followed by a rest phase while the remaining permanent teeth erupt. iCare monitors your child during this rest phase at no charge. Appointments during active Phase 1 treatment are infrequent, typically every 6–10 weeks, to minimize disruption to school and family life.

Phase 2, The Bigger Picture

Phase 1 creates the foundation for a healthy smile by addressing skeletal and jaw growth issues. Phase 2 is where the final smile is built, aligning all the permanent teeth. After Phase 1, there's a rest period of 12–18 months that allows the remaining permanent teeth to erupt naturally. iCare provides complimentary monitoring during this phase to ensure everything is progressing as expected.

Phase 2 usually begins when enough permanent teeth are present, typically between ages 11 and 14. Because Phase 1 handled the structural work, such as arch width, bite class, and skeletal position, Phase 2 cases for our Phase 1 patients often run shorter, frequently 12–18 months instead of 24–30 months. For Phase 2, iCare offers a range of options including KLOwen SL custom digital metal braces, LightForce custom ceramic braces, Invisalign, or Invisalign First. We use the same custom digital planning approach for Phase 2 as we do for Phase 1, no stock brackets or average-fit assumptions. Retention after Phase 2 is important, so we provide both bonded retainers and removable Essix retainers, with the retention plan fully explained at the start of Phase 2 treatment.

Fitting It Into a Duluth School Schedule

We know Chattahoochee Elementary and neighboring schools don't make it easy to pull kids for appointments during the school day. That's why iCare offers early morning slots starting at 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, allowing students to make it to school before the first bell. We also provide Saturday appointments that run from 9 AM–2 PM to accommodate families with busy weekday schedules. Phase 1 visits are infrequent by design, occurring typically every 6–10 weeks after the initial evaluation and appliance fitting. Getting a timely early orthodontic evaluation can help parents avoid guessing about their child's development while the growth window is still useful for intervention.

Why Some Duluth Families Choose iCare in Norcross

There may be orthodontists closer to Duluth. However, some families still come to Norcross because they want a specific kind of early orthodontic evaluation: conservative, growth-focused, digital, and explained clearly every step of the way. Dr. Jamie Kim and Dr. Vinh Huynh are both board-certified orthodontists, bringing decades of combined experience to your child’s care. Our office uses iTero scanning, advanced digital treatment planning, and in-house technology to make findings easier for parents to understand and to provide precise, customized treatment. This approach resonates with parents around Pleasant Hill, Steve Reynolds, and Gwinnett Place fitting orthodontic visits around school calendars, as well as private school families around Duluth and Pleasant Hill. The drive makes the most sense from the Pleasant Hill side of Duluth, depending on traffic, offering a practical route.
