Maybe you're coming from the Lilburn City Park or Camp Creek Elementary side of Lilburn, and you've started noticing things with your child's smile. Perhaps there's crowding, or you've heard them breathing through their mouth more often, or their bite just doesn't seem to fit quite right. As a parent, you naturally wonder if it's something to watch, or if it's time to see an orthodontist.
The thought of an "orthodontic evaluation" can bring up a lot of questions. Will they recommend braces for a 7-year-old? Will they say everything looks fine and send us home? Will there be uncomfortable X-rays, sticky impressions, or anything that might upset my child? It's the uncertainty, more than anything, that can make the first step feel daunting.
We get it. That's why we want to walk you through exactly what happens at your child's first visit to iCare Orthodontics in Norcross. Our office is on Indian Trail Lilburn Rd in Norcross, right by Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) and near the Beaver Ruin side of Norcross. The drive makes the most sense from the side of Lilburn closest to Duluth, Peachtree Corners, or Norcross, and our office is accessible from the Lawrenceville Hwy / 29 side of Lilburn.
Your Child's First iCare Visit: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Arrival and Welcome
When you walk into iCare Orthodontics, our front desk team will greet you warmly and help you get settled comfortably. Our office space is designed to feel calm and welcoming for both kids and parents. We don't run a high-volume in-and-out operation here. Our goal is to keep every visit organized, calm, and respectful of your time. We know juggling school and activities is tough, so we offer morning slots as early as 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays. For families who can't pull kids from school, Saturday appointments are available from 9 AM to 2 PM.
The Digital Scan
One of the first things we do is get a complete picture of your child's teeth and jaw, but not with old-fashioned, gooey putty impressions. We use an iTero intraoral scanner. A small, comfortable wand passes gently over your child's teeth for just a few minutes, creating a precise 3D digital model of their mouth right on a screen in real time. Kids typically find this process interesting, not uncomfortable, it's about as intimidating as brushing their teeth. This quick, mess-free scan completely replaces the traditional impression process, giving us incredibly accurate data much faster.
The On-Screen Review
Once the scan is complete, Dr. Kim will usually pull up your child's 3D model on a large screen in the consultation room. She'll then walk through what we're seeing with you, not just talk at you. If there's a narrow palate, you'll see it clearly on the screen. If the bite is shifting or not aligning correctly, you'll see that too. And if everything looks perfectly normal for your child's age and development, you'll see that as well. Dr. Kim explains what each finding means for your child's oral development in plain, easy-to-understand language, avoiding clinical jargon. She takes the time to answer all your questions before discussing any potential recommendations. On occasion, Dr. Vinh may offer support and guidance when Dr. Kim wants another orthodontic perspective. Our goal is for parents to leave this part of the visit truly understanding what we found, what we might be watching, and whether any treatment is actually needed.
The Honest Answer
Here's the part that surprises many parents: the honest answer is often "not yet." Many children who come in for an early orthodontic evaluation do not need Phase 1 treatment right away. If that's the case for your child, Dr. Kim will tell you so clearly and directly. When early treatment isn't indicated, your child will enter our complimentary monitoring program. We'll check in every six months, at no cost to you, to carefully watch their growth window and track the eruption of their permanent teeth. If treatment is recommended, you'll leave with a clear, easy-to-understand treatment plan, a 3D visualization of what to expect, an estimated timeline, and a transparent cost estimate, all before you're asked to make any decision.
The Financial Conversation
We believe in complete transparency, especially when it comes to costs. No treatment is ever recommended without providing you with a full, clear financial picture first. Our team will sit down with you to explain all your financing options, which include Cherry 0% interest financing for qualified patients, CareCredit, and iCare's own convenient in-office interest-free payment plans. If you provide your insurance details before your visit, we'll verify your benefits ahead of time so you know exactly what's covered. We never spring financial surprises. You'll know what you're signing up for before you sign anything at all.
What Phase 1 Treatment Actually Involves
If Phase 1 treatment is recommended for your child, it typically involves a specific type of appliance designed to guide growth and create a better foundation for adult teeth. Most Phase 1 treatment at iCare centers on one of four main appliances:
- Palatal expander: This is often the most common Phase 1 appliance. It gently widens the upper jaw to create crucial space for permanent teeth to erupt properly and can also significantly improve airway width, which is vital for breathing and sleep.
- Space maintainers: If a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay or injury, a space maintainer holds the gap open, preventing neighboring teeth from drifting and ensuring the permanent tooth has enough room to come in correctly.
- Habit appliances: These are designed to help break harmful oral habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting, which can narrow the dental arch and push front teeth forward, impacting bite development.
- Functional appliances: Used to guide jaw position during growth, functional appliances can correct developing underbites or severe overbites by encouraging proper jaw alignment.
All these appliances are planned digitally using the precise iTero scan data we collected. What used to require a 3–4 week lab return for appliance fabrication is now often handled efficiently in-house, thanks to our digital technology. Phase 1 typically lasts 9–12 months, followed by a rest phase while the remaining permanent teeth erupt. iCare monitors your child's progress during this rest period at no additional charge. Appointments during Phase 1 are infrequent, usually every 6–10 weeks, making it manageable for busy families.
Phase 2, The Bigger Picture
Phase 1 treatment creates the essential foundation, it addresses the structural and skeletal issues that can't be corrected later. Phase 2 is where the final, precise smile is built.
After Phase 1, there's a rest period, usually lasting 12–18 months, which allows all the remaining permanent teeth to erupt naturally. We continue to monitor your child's development during this time, ensuring everything is progressing as expected. Phase 2 then begins when enough permanent teeth are present, typically between the ages of 11 and 14.
Because Phase 1 handled the structural work, like arch width, bite class, and skeletal position, Phase 2 cases for our Phase 1 patients often run shorter than a single comprehensive treatment. Instead of 24–30 months, Phase 2 might only require 12–18 months. For Phase 2, iCare offers a range of advanced options, including KLOwen SL custom digital metal braces, LightForce custom ceramic braces, Invisalign, or Invisalign First. Just as with Phase 1, we use the same custom digital planning approach for Phase 2, no stock brackets or average-fit assumptions. Every treatment is designed uniquely for your child's needs. After Phase 2, a retention plan is crucial. We'll explain options like bonded retainers and removable Essix retainers at the start of your Phase 2 journey to ensure their beautiful new smile lasts a lifetime.
Fitting It Into a Lilburn School Schedule
We understand that Camp Creek Elementary and other neighboring schools, whether public or private, don't always make it easy to pull kids out for appointments. That's why we've tailored our office hours to accommodate families from Lilburn public schools, private schools, Christian schools, and homeschool routines. We offer early morning slots starting at 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, allowing students to often make it to school before the first bell. We also provide Saturday appointments from 9 AM to 2 PM for those who simply cannot schedule during the week.
Thankfully, Phase 1 visits are infrequent by design. After the initial evaluation and appliance fitting, most families only need to come in every 6–10 weeks. Getting a timely evaluation can save parents from guessing about their child's development while the growth window is still useful for guiding their growth.
