Your Child's First iCare Orthodontics Visit: A Peachtree Corners Family Walkthrough

Posted May 25, 2026 9 min read

Maybe you’re coming from the Forum or Pinckneyville Middle School side of Peachtree Corners, and you’ve started noticing subtle shifts in your child's smile: perhaps a developing overbite, crowding where permanent teeth should come in, or even open-mouth breathing that just doesn’t seem right. Or maybe your family dentist has suggested an early orthodontic evaluation. These observations can bring a wave of questions. Is it too early for braces? Will they recommend extensive treatment for a 7-year-old? Or will they just say everything looks fine and send us home? It's natural to feel a little unsure about what that first visit actually involves, especially when you’re balancing Peachtree Corners school schedules, athletics, and after-school appointments.

We understand that the biggest hurdle isn't typically the decision to call, but the uncertainty of not knowing what to expect once you do. Will there be intimidating X-rays, uncomfortable scans, or high-pressure sales? At iCare Orthodontics, we believe the first visit should remove those fears, not create new ones.

Here's exactly what happens at your child's first visit to iCare Orthodontics in Norcross. Our office is on Indian Trail Lilburn Rd in Norcross, right by Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) and near the Beaver Ruin side of Norcross. We're a short drive from parts of Peachtree Corners, with a route that’s practical from PIB or the Holcomb Bridge side, without heading into Atlanta.

Your Child's First iCare Visit: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Arrival and Welcome

From the moment you walk through our doors, our priority is to make you and your child feel comfortable and informed. We'll warmly greet you at the front desk, verify your information, and help you get settled in our calm, comfortable reception area. We don't run a high-volume, in-and-out operation. Our goal is to keep the visit calm, organized, and respectful of your valuable time. We know how challenging it can be to coordinate around busy family life; that's why we offer morning slots as early as 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Saturday appointments from 9 AM–2 PM for families who can't pull kids from school.

The Digital Scan

One of the first things we'll do is perform an iTero intraoral scan – and yes, that means no traditional, messy putty impressions or trays. Instead, a small, comfortable wand is gently passed over your child's teeth for just a few minutes. As it moves, a complete, precise 3D digital model of their teeth and jaw appears on a screen in real time. Kids typically find this process interesting and surprisingly comfortable, often comparing it to a high-tech toothbrush. It's truly about as intimidating as that. This cutting-edge scan swiftly replaces what used to be a somewhat unpleasant and time-consuming process, providing immediate, accurate data for our evaluation.

The On-Screen Review

After the scan, Dr. Jamie Kim, a board-certified orthodontist, will usually pull up your child's 3D digital scan on a large screen right in front of you. This isn't just for us; it's for you. Dr. Kim walks through the scan with you, not at you, explaining everything clearly. We show you exactly what we're seeing: If there's a narrow palate, you'll see it. If the bite is shifting out of alignment, you'll see it. If growth patterns look normal and healthy for your child’s age, you’ll see that too. Dr. Kim explains what each finding means for your child’s current and future development, using plain language, not confusing clinical shorthand. She takes the time to answer all your questions thoroughly before moving on to any recommendations. If Dr. Kim wants another orthodontic perspective, Dr. Vinh will offer his clinical support and guidance. Our goal is for parents to leave this part of the visit understanding exactly what we found, what we're watching, and whether orthodontic treatment is actually needed right now.

The Honest Answer

Here's the part that often surprises most parents: the honest answer is frequently "not yet." Many children who come in for an early orthodontic evaluation do not need Phase 1 treatment right away. Dr. Kim will tell you that clearly and directly. When that's the case, your child simply enters our complimentary monitoring program. iCare checks in every six months, at no cost, to carefully watch your child’s growth window and tooth eruption patterns, ensuring we intervene only when the timing is truly beneficial. When early treatment is recommended, you’ll leave with a clear, personalized treatment plan, a 3D visualization of the projected outcome, an expected timeline, and a full, transparent cost estimate, so you can make an informed decision without any pressure.

The Financial Conversation

We believe in full transparency, especially when it comes to financial planning. No treatment is ever recommended without a complete and clear cost picture presented first. Our team will sit down with you to thoroughly explain all available financing options. This includes Cherry 0% interest financing for qualified patients, CareCredit, and iCare’s own convenient in-office interest-free payment plans. For your convenience, we also handle insurance verification before your first visit if you provide your plan details. We don't believe in springing financial surprises on families. You’ll know exactly what you’re signing up for before you sign anything.

What Phase 1 Treatment Actually Involves

Phase 1 treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics, typically focuses on correcting issues with jaw development, arch width, and space management while your child’s jaw is still growing. Most Phase 1 treatment at iCare centers on one of four common appliances:

  • Palatal expander: This is one of the most common Phase 1 appliances. It gently widens the upper jaw to create crucial space for permanent teeth and can significantly improve the width of the airway, addressing issues like mouth breathing.
  • Space maintainers: If your child loses a baby tooth early due to decay or injury, a space maintainer can hold that space open. This prevents neighboring teeth from shifting and ensures the permanent tooth has the proper room to erupt into its correct position.
  • Habit appliances: These custom-made appliances help address detrimental oral habits like thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting. These habits, if left unaddressed, can narrow the dental arch and push teeth forward, impacting bite development.
  • Functional appliances: Used to guide jaw position during key growth phases, functional appliances are particularly effective when an underbite or significant overbite is beginning to develop.

All of our appliances are planned digitally using precise iTero scan data. What used to require a 3–4 week lab return for appliance fabrication is now often handled efficiently in-house, ensuring accuracy and faster treatment starts. Phase 1 typically lasts 9–12 months, followed by a rest phase while the remaining permanent teeth erupt. iCare monitors your child during this critical rest period at no charge. Appointments during Phase 1 are designed to be infrequent – usually every 6–10 weeks – to minimize disruption to your family's schedule.

Phase 2, The Bigger Picture

Phase 1 treatment creates the essential foundation for a healthy smile by addressing skeletal and spacing issues. Phase 2 is where the final, precise smile is built. After Phase 1 concludes, there's a planned rest period of approximately 12–18 months, allowing the remaining permanent teeth to erupt naturally. We continue to monitor your child's progress during this phase at no cost.

Phase 2 begins when enough permanent teeth are present, typically when your child is between ages 11 and 14. A significant advantage of completing Phase 1 is that because it handled the structural work – arch width, bite class, and skeletal position – Phase 2 cases for our Phase 1 patients often run shorter. Instead of 24–30 months, many of our Phase 1 patients complete Phase 2 in 12–18 months. Phase 2 options at iCare include KLOwen SL custom digital metal braces, LightForce custom ceramic braces, Invisalign, or Invisalign First. We use the same custom digital planning approach for Phase 2 as we do for Phase 1 – no stock brackets, no average-fit assumptions. This personalized approach ensures efficient and precise treatment. Finally, retention after Phase 2 is crucial for maintaining the beautiful results, with options like bonded retainers and removable Essix retainers, and the full retention plan is thoroughly explained at the start of Phase 2.

Fitting It Into a Peachtree Corners School Schedule

We know Pinckneyville Middle School and neighboring schools like Wesleyan School don't always make it easy to pull kids for appointments. That's why we’ve carefully designed our schedule with busy Peachtree Corners families in mind. iCare offers early morning slots starting at 7 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, allowing students to often make it to school before the first bell. Additionally, Saturday appointments run from 9 AM–2 PM for those who prefer not to miss school at all. Phase 1 visits are infrequent by design. After the initial evaluation and appliance fitting, most families only need to come in every 6–10 weeks. Getting a timely evaluation can help parents avoid guessing games while their child’s unique growth window is still useful.

Why Some Peachtree Corners Families Choose iCare in Norcross
